Miami is also the second most popular tourist destination in the United States. New York being the first.
Travelling to Miami
We flew to Miami after spending 5 days in Cancun. The flight from Cancun was approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes with American Airlines. At the airport our private transfer was waiting for us with a sign with our name on it. Our accommodation for the 3 nights we were staying in Miami was The Whitelaw hotel which is on Collins Street. The journey to our hotel was approximately 20 minutes.
Accommodation
Finally we arrived at our destination hotel which cost approximately £110 per night. The Whitelaw hotel is a small hotel which is ideally situated within walking distance to the beach, bars shops ect. Check in was quick and easy with friendly staff. Although The rooms are considered to be Art Decor which was not apparent to us but they were clean and sufficient for our needs. However the lobby area does have an Art Decor feel to it. The hotel does have a small lift which was great for us as we were on the 3rd floor which helped with our heavy cases. Along with the other facilities the hotel provides beach towels and also has an ATM which was great.
Beach
Miami beach was what you would expect and what is portrait in films and also in documentaries. The beach is lovely with white sand and very clean. Even the sea was nice, clean and warm unlike the sea in the UK. As you would expect there are a lot of men and women flexing their muscles on the beach and working out. Miami beach is definitely a posers paradise. Suppose if you have got it flaunt it lol.

There are so many bars and restaurants to choose from directly facing Miami beach which is great if you like to people watch. You also witness people driving up and down the front in their expensive cars. Miami beach does seem to be the place to be. Unfortunately the prices of drinks and food reflect this in many of the bars and restaurants. Of course you can find cheaper places to eat and drink but if you want the location you have to pay the price.

On our first day we found a lovely bar Icon On Ocean on the front of Miami Beach On one occasion we decided to get a cocktail called “A Bulldog” which is a margarita with 2 bottles of Corona resting on the glass. Undoubtedly this seemed a never ending drink as as soon as you drank some of the margarita it was topped up with the Corona. After one each we felt a bit tipsy but still decided to have another one each lol. Although they were £35 each but during happy hour you got 2 for £35 considering the prices at Miami beach it was a good price. On an evening the bars were very busy even though there is a lot to choose from.

As we liked the location of the Icon On The Ocean we ate there on more than one occasion. The food and service was excellent. Starters are from $9-$17. As we like spicey food we opted for the Firecracker Chicken Wings. Burgers and Sandwiches range from $11 – $17. Additionally there are a range of Pizza, Fish and meat dishes. Considering the location it was extremely good value.

Excursion to Everglades
On our second day we booked an excursion to the Everglades on line which cost around £42 and was around 4 1/2 long. We are so glad we booked it. Firstly we were picked up outside our hotel mid morning by coach and taken to the Everglades. We were split into groups and boarded the boat accordingly. The boat is what you would expect to be flying up and down the waters. Although we drove at quite some speed there were times when we drove slow to ensure no harm came to wildlife etc

Conservation Site
The Everglades are a conservation site and everything is done to try and protect the wildlife and the environment. Our guide was very informative and humorous which made the whole experience great fun. We sat at the very front of the boat which was great on occasions we were able to stand up. I (Debbie) wore a sun hat which was a bad idea when travelling at such speed.
We did see a few Crocodiles/Alligators along the way. Although as they were very still it was often difficult to see them at times. Our guide had a keen eye for spotting them and would point them out. Crocodiles can live in freshwater and seawater. Alligators prefer freshwater. The Everglades is the only place where Crocodiles and Alligators coexist.

Finally after the Airboat we were allowed to wander round and take photo’s of some of the crocodiles/alligators that were in captivity for rehabilitation before being release back into the wild. Afterwards there was an opportunity to hold one of the babies which we did. Although we was not too sure if this was the right thing to do as it had its mouth taped up. I am sure these animals were very well taken care of as the staff and guides were so passionate about protecting them.
Shopping in Miami
In Miami there are many designer shops and high street shops which are often a lot cheaper than in the UK. Considering the low cost of some goods in Miami we bought some Converse which were at least 1/3 cheaper than in the UK. On most of the streets around Miami Beach you will find the designer shops and some highstreet stores which are also a cheaper than in England
Summary
If anyone is considering to go to Miami we would strongly recommend doing it. It is an amazing place with lovely beaches, greaqt restaurants and bars. There are also many things to do in Miami which we didnt have enough time to do. Because it is an amazing place and we were limited for time we will definitely go back to Miami.

Cape Verde is in the Atlantic Ocean and lies off the western coast of Africa.
Travelling to Cape Verde
Firstly we travelled to Sal in Cape Verde from Manchester Airport. The night before our flight we stayed at the Clayton Hotel which is a short walk away from the terminals, arriving at the airport on the morning of the flight was easy. Due to the hustle and bustle of the airport and a lot of queueing we tend to book in to the Executive lounges as not is this less hassle it can also be cheaper than spending in the restaurants and bars of the airport. When we arrived in Cape Verde (Sal) and boarded our coach we had to wait some time on the coach for all passengers to arrive.
Accommodation
Finally we arrived at our destination The Melia Dunas Resort which is approximately 20 minutes from the airport. As we had upgraded to a premier room it was a larger room than a lot of hotel rooms we had stayed in. The rooms were decorated in neutral colours and to a relatively good standard for the cost of the hotel. The rooms were cleaned well daily with fresh towels provided.
We booked through Tui and paid £700 each which we thought was good value. Tui put this hotel has a 4 star plus but the official rating is 5 star. The location of the room was also good as it was what we felt was the centre of both the Melia Dunas and the Sol Dunas. The Sol Dunas is the sister hotel to the Melia. You can use facilities in both hotels which makes it a big resort to wonder around.

Pool Scene
There are 5 pools in total 2 in the Melia Dunas and 3 in the Sol Dunas and a small aqua park. If staying in the Melia you can use any of the pools. There was never any worry about getting a sun lounger as there were plenty to go around. All the pools have their own bar so you do not have to go far for a drink. The restaurants are also very close to the pools therefore you dont even have to go far for lunch. Beach towels are provided around the pool and can be changed daily.

There is also a beach bar which both hotels can use. However the Melia did have a beach bar that only the Melia guests could use. This was our favorite bar both during the day and early evening. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Before you finished your drinks they would ask if you were staying for another drink and what would you like.

I would strongly recommend that you ensure you have insect repellent on especially on an evening as the first night there I did not put any repellent on and I was bit either by mosquitoes or sand fly’s so many times I needed to go to a pharmacy.

The Melia had a buffet restaurant and 3 A la Carte restaurants Italian, Indian, seafood and Grill. You have to book the A la Carte restaurants in advance but this is easy to do. In the Manhattan bar there is the booking in electronic system which shows you times and dates of availability for each restaurant. Fortunately we managed to book in each of them on more than one occasion.
Specialist restaurant
On one occasion we ate breakfast at the buffet restaurant which had a good choice of food but it felt like eating at a cheap café as opposed to a restaurant. Following this we then ate breakfast each day at the Italian restaurant which was opening during the day for meals. This was both a buffet and waiter/waitress service. This was much more of a pleasant experience. Also we ate there and the seafood restaurant on a lunch time which again also offered buffet and waiter service.
The lunchtime menu’s were not extensive but enough to try different things each day. There was sandwiches, burritos, pizza, burgers, salads etc all cooked to order. There was also a BBQ everyday serving chicken, sausage, burger etc. The drinks were also nice and cold whether this was a soft drink or an alcoholic drink. The wine was better than a lot of wines we have experienced on some all inclusive hotels.
Evening Entertainment
Unfortunately we did not see many of the shows at this hotel as they were on the Sol Dunas site and started at 9pm. We often had not finished dinner until this time. We did see lion king one night which was performed by the animation team. It was mainly aimed at children which was nice to see them all enjoying it and getting involved. The animation team worked hard both day and night and were always smiling.

Santa Maria
The hotel offered a shuttle bus to the town of Santa Maria just 5 minutes drive. It is a lovely little place with a lovely beach and plenty of bars and restaurants. It even has its own Irish Bar (The Dubliner). The Dubliner has a Weather Forecast Stone which is so funny. We took a photo of it and it makes us laugh every time we look at it.
The drinks in the Dubliner are good too. We went to watch football one day but they had a technical issue so we had to go to another bar. We decided to walk to Santa Maria on one occasion and it is a lot further by beach than road and took us 2 and ½ hours. It was a lovely walk though as it was a nice sunny day. A return taxi cost 3 euro’s.
Haggling
The locals do hassle you a bit to come in to their shops but fortunately not too much unlike other countries. We were aware to haggle when buying anything. We admired a piece of artwork in a shop. The store owner asked for 300 euro’s in the end we paid 35. The art work was very large and on a wooden frame. They removed it from the wooden frame and rolled it up for us to take home.We have had some nice comments about this art work which is now in our living room. Not everyone’s taste but we love it.

Island Tour
Jeep Island Tour
After a walk in to Santa Maria we booked an island tour whilst in Santa Maria (25 euro’s each) from a local tour operator. The following day we were picked up at our hotel at 8.30am in an open back jeep which seemed like a good idea at the time. We then went to pick up other guests from other hotels.

Our first stop was a salt farm which was not much to look at to be honest.. Children ran out of their houses and followed the jeep.

The next stop was sleeping lion mountain which you saw in the distance and did actually look like a sleeping lion. As the weather was a bit hazy the photo’s were not very clear unfortunately.
Local School
We stopped off at a supermarket to buy fruit, sweets etc for a school. When we were driving to the school we passed little shanti towns. The children at the school were of various ages. They all seemed happy and well cared for. We were not allowed to give them the food directly but had to put them in a donations box. We were also not allowed to take photo’s in the school. As the children only spoke Portuguese we could not communicate with them. The children did seem happy to see us and were very smiley.

The Blue Eye
Our next stop was the Blue Eye. The blue eye also known has Buracona. Basically the Blue Eye is a pool formed by the ocean in to lava rock. The pool is quite small and when the sun shines on it it turns a lovely turquoise colour. On good days people do swim here but as it was windy it was far too dangerous to swim. Also there is a little gift shop here selling souvenirs’, drinks and snacks. The Blue Eye was a bit disappointing as it was a lot smaller than expected, but there isn’t a lot of things to do or see in Sal especially on excursions.

As it was approaching lunch the guide took us to a buffet restaurant in a small village. The food was quite basic with fish, chicken, rice, stew, potato’s, chips and bread. Once you had chosen what you wanted to eat it was weighed. Surprisingly you paid by weight for your food. Although we had experienced this method of paying in Brazil we did not expect it in Cape Verde even though it also has a Portuguese influence We found this expensive for the poor quality food but did not mind paying as we felt it helped the locals out as it is a very poor country.

The next place of interest we were taking to was the area where all the communication to the island is based air traffic, mobile andtv masts. Monte Currai is the hill in the capital city of Espargos where the communication centre is based. Undoubtedly you get an amazing view of Sal from here.

Also the tour guide was very informative as we walked round to see different views of Sal. Along with a lot of interesting facts he informed us that the Portuguese government have provided a lot of money to build more social housing for the poorer people of Cape Verde. The guide pointing out various areas of social housing which could be seen from Monte Currai hill.
Lemon Sharks
There were a lot of tourists where we went to view the sharks. The guides advised us that we could go in the water as it was safe to do so. The water was extremely cold therefore took a bit of time to actually walk in to the sea. Surprisingly the sharks could be clearly seen in the distance. Should you walk close to them they would swim away. The Lemon Sharks are very timid creatures.
Salt Lake
Our final destination was the salt lake (Pedra de Lume). There is a lot of history surrounding the salt lakes and mines in Salt lakes and mines of Pedra de Lume. It is estimated that they go back to the 18th century. It was a great experience trying to swim in the salt lake which was virtually impossible due to the amount of salt. Most people who were in the Salt Lake just laid back and floated.. It was a very strange feeling as it felt more like being weightless as apposed to being in water.

We enjoyed this out of the whole island trip. There is not that much to see and do in Sal but we felt that this trip was well worth doing. The tour guide was amazing and informative. A bit of advice if taking the trip in a jeep either stay inside the jeep or ensure you have warm dark clothing on. The island is very windy all year round therefore at the back of the jeep it was cold and windy with sand blowing up into the back of the jeep. We arrived back at our hotel looking very windswept and my (Debbie) white denim jacket looked a shade of beige.
Summary
Sal is a lovely place to visit for a holiday. You can get some nice weather in Cape Verde depending on the time of year but where it is situated it is often very windy. There isn’t a lot to see or do outside of your hotel. Although Santa Maria does have plenty of shops, restaurants and bars. On the sight seeing from there isnt much to see especially if you are wanting to do this as an excursion. The hotel was lovely with food, dinks and services. Would we go back to Sal probably not as we have seen and done all we needed.

Take beach towel pegs as the islands are renowned for being windy.
Take jacket etc for evening depending on what time of year you visit.
Sal offers the most to do with regards to the islands.
A trip to Santa Maria is recommended and most hotels are close by with many offering a free shuttle.
Be prepared to haggle. We bought art work that they originally asked for 300 euro’s but only paid 35 euro’s.
Ensure you take mosquito spray. I (Debbie) was bitten so much on one night whilst in the bar near the beach. Not sure if it was actually mosquito’s or sand flies but they had a good feast on my legs.
The excursion was good value for money and worth doing.
Antalya is know as the Turquoise Coast due to its beautiful blue sea.
Lara Beach is considered the Las Vegas of Turkey with its themed hotels including Concorde, Kremlin and Titanic to name a few.
Travelling to Lara Beach
We flew to Antalya from Manchester airport in the month of September. The holiday for two weeks cost £800 with Tui. This was a great price for the time of year and the standard of hotel. Often we book last minute as the prices can come down but on occasions they can also go up (supply and demand). Following our flight we were taken to the hotel by coach which was included in our holiday price. Transfer to the IC Hotel Green Palace was pretty good as it only took around 20 minutes.
Accommodation
We were not sure what to expect or what restrictions would be put in place due to Covid 19. We arrived at the hotel around 11pm and check in was quick and easy. Hand sanitizer was available through out the hotel. All members of staff wore face masks. Some things had to be changed due to Covid which was understandable. The lobby bar was open 24 hours therefore we could sit and have a drink whilst our cases were taken to our rooms. Unfortunately a drink turned in to several drinks therefore we didn’t actually get to our room until 2.30 am the next day lol.
Hotel Rooms
The rooms are a bit dated and basic not what you would expect from a 5 star hotel. Every day the rooms are cleaned to a high standard. Due to covid there were no soft furnishings in the room or cups which is understandable. As we do not spend much time in the hotel room this was not an issue. The hotel made up for this in so many other ways. The staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel itself has a Bali theme and is quite pleasing to the eye.

The hotel had many specialist restaurants Turkish, Mexican, Italian, Teppenyaki and Fish Restaurant. We ate at the Turkish, Mexican and Italian on more than one occasion as we liked the food so much. The Turkish and the Mexican restaurants are a snack bar and part of the buffet restaurant during the day which made it feel like you were not in a specialist restaurant.

On one occasion whilst we were in the Turkish restaurant a child and his father drove through the restaurant on a childs electric car even though it was easy to just drive around. Although the surroundings were not as we had experienced on other holidays the food and service were excellent.
Mexican Retaurant
The Mexican Restaurant is part of the buffet restaurant therefore the waiters are serving both the Mexican Restaurant and Buffet Restaurant therefore service was a bit slow. Fortunately the food made up of this as there was a good choice on the menu. Certainly overlooking the water fountain made this a pleasant dining experience.

Italian Restaurant
The Italian Restaurant is purpose built therefore the experience is as you would expect. Undoubtedly this was our favorite place to eat because the service was excellent, the surroundings were very pleasant and the food was good for an all inclusive Italian restaurant. Although we only age at the Italian, Mexican and Turkish Restaurant the Italian was what we considered the best.
As we booked with Tui and it never stated on their information that these restaurants were chargeable. We complained to Tui who allowed us to visit the Al a carte restaurants at no cost. They have since changed their website to inform that the restaurants are now chargeable.
Beach

The sea is crystal clear and nice and warm to swim in. Due to the sand being a mixture of sand and gravel at the edge of the sea suggest taking water shoes. Although Children and other adults did not seem to mind it and had no problem walking on it. Must be made of stronger stuff than us as it hurt our feet. Also there is a long jete where there are sunbeds and steps down to the sea.

The pools are in plenty at this hotel and there is one which is supposed to be adults only. The clientele at the time we went was mainly young Russian families who ignored that the one pool out of many was adults only. Also we met some lovely Russian families who also did not agree with children in adults only pools and ensured their children did not do this. We love to see children and having fun but sometimes it is good to have a place where it is adults only. There is a pool where there is a lot of activities aimed at adults but children can go in this pool.. Aerobics, water cycling etc. which was great fun.
Pamukale
Having been to Turkey so many times and always wanted to go to Pamukkale meaning “cotton castle” we decided as we were in Turkey for 2 weeks we would go there. The journey from Antayla to Pamukkale is approximately 3 hours 30 mins which is quite a long time. Firstly we were picked up at our hotel at 6.30am and then picked up some other guests from various other hotels. After around 30 minutes we then had to change to another bus. Nobody was wearing masks on the mini bus not even the driver or the guide. On our way to Pamukkale we came to a police check and was told to put our masks on as if not it was £100 fine. Once we had gone past the Police we were told we could take our masks off.
Onyx Factory
Our first stop on this excursion was an onyx factory and store. Like all places that are trying to sell tourists expensive products you are given a talk in groups about the history of the products and the origin. The items were very beautiful and range from jewelry to large statues. We did not buy anything as we felt it was too expensive. Fortunately there was no pressure to buy and we wasn’t there long.

Our next stop was the hot springs and mud bath. The hot springs consists of one extremely hot natural pool where the water comes from beneath the earth. The other pool is normal temperature. The idea is to go into the hot pool for about 8 minutes and then into the other pool for two minutes which is supposed to cleans your skin and leave it soft and fresh. The hot pool is very hot and takes some time to get into at first. There is changing facilities here and somewhere to get food and drink if necessary.

Finally we arrived Pamukkale itself which was the highlight of the day. its official name is Hierapolis. The area is steeped in history going back to the ancient romans. The guide was very knowledgeable and gave us a tour of Pamukkale for about 30 mins informing us of the history. From a distance the area looks like it is covered in snow but is actually carbonate minerals left by the flowing thermal springs. The whole place is spectacular and interesting.
Preserve the site
To preserve the sight you can not wear shoes whilst walking on the carbonate minerals. You can bath in the hot pools which was lovely. We were given approximately 3 hours at Pamukkale which seems a lot but there is a lot to see therefore the time went past so quick. Although the main attraction is the snowy white carbonate minerals there is a lot of other interesting things to see from ancient ruins to Cleopatra’s pool. There are many places to get a drink and a bite to eat. It was a very hot day when we visited therefore a fresh ice cold drink was much appreciated.
When we arrived back at the hotel it was around 11.30 which was a very long day. Despite this we would strongly recommend to do this excursion. It cost around £55 each which included lunch and dinner.
Adventure Day
Jeep Safari
Also we had an adventure day which consisted of white water rafting, quad bikes, jeep safari, fishing and zip liner. In the morning we were picked up at our hotel around 8.30. The journey time to the destination was about 1 hour 40 minutes. Approximately half way there we had quite a lengthy stop on the way to get a drink and use bathroom facilities.
When we arrived we were taken to a large room with many other guests from different mini buses for a briefing. Throughout this there is someone filming you so be aware as some of the footage of us does not look very flattering lol. Firstly we were given helmets and life jackets and advised to be in our swim wear. All other belongings had to be left in the mini bus. The guides try to sell waterproof phone covers and water shoes but we had brought our own.

Our first stop was the Jeep Safari which consisted of 6 people in each jeep. This jeep safari was nothing like we had experienced before. On previous Jeep Safari’s we have not needed an helmet but on thisjeep safari you definitely needed one. Because the driver was excellent and was so in control of the jeep his driving made the experience so exciting. The driver drove up and down steep hills, through water and on rocks. Which was all done at quite a speed. On many occasions we were lifted off our seats and hit our heads on the bar of the jeep hence why helmets were needed.

From the jeep safari we were then taken to a river. It was quite funny walking down to the river as the guides made everyone walk down in a zig zag making movements like a plane. Not sure why this was but it seemed ridiculous but fun at the same time. The guide asked us to form a human chain across the river as the rocks at the bottom were quite slippy. Also the water in the river was the coldest water we had ever been in. It quite literally took your breath away. Looking at peoples reaction it was clear to see that everyone was shocked to feel how could it was. It was such a relief when we got to the other side to be out of the water.
White Water Rafting
The main attraction of the day was the white water rafting. This was our next stop where we were taken to the boats. Each boat had 6 people and a guide in our boat.

Firstly the guide gave us direction with regards to the rowing of the boat and also some words that we had to shout when he said specific words. When we got in to the boat we were put in set positions due to our weight and to ensure the boat was evenly weighted. There were a lot of other boats setting off at the same time. Soon after setting off we experienced some rapids which were great fun. When we got near other boats the guide advised us to splash the other boat by scooping up water with our oars and they did the same back to us. Again the water was very cold but not has cold as the previous river.
Swimming in the water
On one occasion the guide from another boat pulled us out of the boat in to the water by our life jackets. It was all done in good fun and made the experience not only excited but great fun. Some of the river was quite tame but on some occasions the rapids were quite fast and in plenty.
One occasion the rapids through us all in to the center of the boat. There were occasions when we stopped to allow people to have a swim. We got out of the boat to have a swim but soon got back in the boat as the water was too cold. It was too difficult to climb back in the boat therefore the guide pulled you in by the back of your life jacket. Ladies it is advisable to wear a full bathing suite as when I (Debbie) was being pulled back in to the boat I almost lost my bikini bottoms.

After travelling down the river for some time we pulled to the side of the river and got out. Here we were given a cheese pancake and a drink which was not in with the price of the excursion but not expensive. After lunch we were then taken to where we would ride the quad bikes or buggies.
Face Coverings and Sunglasses

Before getting on to the quads we were advised that we needed to buy glasses and face coverings because of the amount of dust. As we had our sunglasses we only had to buy the face covering which cost about £3. We were given brief instructions on how to ride the quads and buggies. Someone was washing the quads and buggies down with an hosepipe to remove the dust from the previous group ride. He then turned the hosepipe and wet all of the group individually. This was quite a relief as it was a very hot day.
Riding round the tracks
All the group had to follow the guide in a line. I (Debbie) was the first in the group and had to break quite often as the guide stopped regularly to ensure that every one in the group was ok. It was very dusty and you did need the glasses and face coverings. We went around a large track several times. It was quite slow and tame compared to the other experiences on this day but still quite enjoyable.
Final white water rafting
Finally we went back to the boat to complete our journey down the river. The white water rafting journey was approximately 3 hours and was so enjoyable.
Fishing
When we got to where we started we had a short time to do some fishing which is not something we would normally find exciting but I (Debbie) caught two decent sized fish which they cooked for us.
Lunch
We then had a buffet style meal of pasta, chicken, salad, fish and bread which was included in the price. The fish that I (Debbie) had caught earlier was cooked and served with the meal. Drinks were an additional cost but again not expensive.
Zip liner
Our last item on the adventure day was the Zip liner. Prior to going on the zip liner you were provided with a safety harness. The zip liner wasn’t at a great height nor was it at a great length. When you landed at the bottom of the zip wire there was someone there to catch you. Although a bit tame compared to other zip liners it was thoroughly enjoyable. We arrived back at our hotel at 6.30pm having had the most amazing, fun exciting day. The excursion cost £60 each and was well worth it. We booked our excursion from a stand just off of the beach.
Summary
This was a exceptionally enjoyable holiday where we met some lovely people and had a great time. Drinks and food in hotel was very good and location also was good with own private beach. We walked on the beach on many occasions and saw many themed hotel eg. Titanic, Concorde, Kremlin. Most of the hotels at Lara Beach are of an high standard. We would strongly recommend a visit to Lara Beach. Should an holiday come up at the right price we would go back to Lara Beach.

Take plenty of water and snacks if going to Pamukkale as it is a long day.
Take Sunglasses, Water shoes, Face Covering and Water Proof Phone Case if going on the adventure day.
Excursions are cheaper if bought outside of the hotel.

We booked the holiday last minute and paid a lot less than most people in the hotel.

Travelling to Los Angeles
We started our journey at Leeds Bradford Airport on the 6th April 2019 and spent a couple of hours in the executive lounge which is well worth the price as you can get into the holiday spirit in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoying breakfast overlooking the runway accompanied for Debbie by a rhubarb gin and ginger while I stuck to the beer! As I was using my BA travel concessions we flew in Business Class down to London, a very comfortable journey made all the better as it was accompanied by a couple of bottles of Champagne!
Night before flight
We arrived in London just after lunch, and ordered an Uber to pick us up and take us to an Airbnb we had booked in Stanwell nearby, as our flight to LA was not departing until the next day. Never take a black cab from Heathrow as they are extortionately expensive and if you are not going very far they will be extremely unhappy as they really want fares into Central London. Our Airbnb was pleasant and well equipped, and in a nice quiet location. We decided to take a trip into nearby Staines, made famous by Ali G. There are a couple of nice bars overlooking the River Thames and we had a pleasant afternoon. We headed back to the Airbnb in the evening and got a good night’s sleep before heading back to the airport for our flight to LA.
Flight
The flight was full so as we were on staff travel we had to wait to see if we could get on the flight which is always a bit nerve-wracking but all turned out very well indeed as we were lucky enough to get seats in First Class! It is always a pleasure to travel in First Class with BA, and no sooner had we sat down then we were offered a glass of very tasty Champagne! For the next 11 hours we enjoyed excellent food, drinks (not much for me as I had to drive at the other end) and a nice relax watching films and a quick snooze.
Accommodation
Hire Car
We landed at LA in the afternoon, and once through immigration we took the bus to pick up our hire car, a sporty white Mustang. It was only a 30 minute drive to the Airbnb we had booked near Manhattan Beach and we found it quite easily. We parked up and were greeted by the owner who came out to us with a cold bottle of water and a warm welcome.
Air bnb
The Airbnb was a room separate to the house, which was well equipped and you could sit out in the garden and use the BBQ facilities. We unloaded our cases and decided to take a drive up to Venice Beach. We had a walk around and called into the Venice Beach Bar which did very tasty looking Mexican food and appetising cocktails. Debbie decided to make full use of the 2 for 1 offer on cocktails and had a couple of Margueritas. We ordered some food which as often in America is way more than you can actually eat, but it was tasty and good value. The bar has a chilled, fun vibe and if I hadn’t been driving we would have probably spent a good few hours there!
Venice Beach
Venice beach is a lively town with lots of interesting shops, cafes and bars to explore and we enjoyed a nice walk along the famous boardwalk. It is a great place to people-watch as the place attracts all kinds of different people. However by this time we were tired after the journey and the time difference and so we headed back to Manhattan Beach for a good sleep.
Hollywood
The next day we were up nice and early (as is typical for the first day after travelling from the UK) and decided that we would drive across LA to Hollywood for a bit of sight-seeing. It felt good driving around with the roof down on the Mustang and eventually parked up in the Hollywood and Highland shopping centre, right in the centre of Hollywood. We had a walk along Hollywood Boulevard, checking out all of the stars on the Walk of Fame. We paid $5 for Debbie to have a star of her own, at least for 5 minutes!
Tour Bus
We decided to take a tour of the famous stars houses which is a good way to tour around Hollywood and Beverly Hills while having a nosey at how some of the rich and famous live. We were also taking to see a shop which is allegedly the most expensive shop in the world where you can only go in via appointment. The tour takes you into the hills and along Mulholland Drive from where you get a great view of both the Hollywood sign and over the whole of the LA area and the Hollywood Bowl.
Summary
Los Angeles is an amazing place with lots to see and do. We will definitely go back as we did not get to see everything we wanted to. Not sure if it is hard to get in to Vipers Room but we would have loved to have gone.

Car hire is very reasonable and a good way to get around LA
Tour bus was a good way to see the houses of the rich and famous with the tour guide providing you with all the information you need.
Food is very reasonably priced. When ordering be aware that they are often big portions.
Allow enough time to see all the things you want to see.

The city has the most population in Italy. It has approximately 2,900.00 residents. Rome’s history spans 28 centuries.
Travelling to Rome
Firstly we flew to Rome from Naples with Ryanair which cost around £85 including small suitcase. Also we had booked a private transfer with Suntransfer which cost around £75 return. At the airport our driver was waiting with a sign with our name on it. The journey to our apartment was around 35 minuites. Fortunately the car was of an high standard with good air conditioning as it was already starting to get hot at 11am.
Accommodation
Finally we reached our Air bnb with in walking distance from the Trastevere area. The apartment had everything we needed with separate bedroom and fully equipped kitchen. Although it was outside of the main areas of Rome it was still in a good location. The Air BnB was a lot cheaper than most of the hotels and also gave us space to relax when we wanted to. It had an outside patio area which was nice to sit and have a drink and a bite to eat in the sunshine.
Local supermarket
As we were on a bit of a budget as we had been to other areas of Italy which were quite expensive so we bought some drinks and food from the local supermarket. Food in the supermarket which was just around the corner from the Air bnb was of a similar price to shopping at home but obviously a lot cheaper than eating out everyday.

Spanish Steps
As our visit to Rome was in June/July the weather was very hot we ensured that we drank a lot of water to keep hydrated. In Rome there are many water fountains in which you can fill up your water bottle. Ensure that you take a reusable water bottle especially in the Summer months. Not only is this cheaper than buying the water but kinder to the environment.
Hop on hop off bus
On one of the days whilst in Rome we decided to see the sights of Rome via the hop on and off tour bus which was great. Although a lot of people did prefer to walk to each sight. Firstly we went to the Vatican Museums which was not too busy as this was early in the morning. Although it was early the sun was already getting hot. Throughout the day we used the hop on hop off bus to visit most of the sights. There is also a full audio on the bus providing information regarding the different sites which was extremely informative. The cost of the bus was around £22 for 1 day. If you book more than 1 day the price is a lot cheaper per day with 3 days costing around £30.

Colosseum

On another day we visited the Colosseum and allowed plenty of time to do this. We paid for a tour guide at the Colosseum which was included in the entry tickets £25. This was great as she provided us with a lot of information regarding the history of the Colosseum. Some of the information was quite gruesome but interesting nether the less. After the guided tour we were given time to walk round on our own. The Colosseum is more spectacular and more interesting than we have seen or heard on TV etc. Having allowed a lot of time to see the Colosseum we feel that we got the most out of our visit.

There is some shade in the Colosseum but you see more if not wanting to stay in the shade all the time therefore ensure you have plenty of suncream and wear a hat if possible, There are water fountains with in the Colosseum so be sure to drink plenty of water.
Restaurants and bars
We were in Rome for 4 days which gave us another time to see everything that we wanted to do and more. Rome has so much to offer architecture, history, nightlife, shopping and culture. What ever your age and travel needs we are sure that Rome will have something to offer. On an evening we would walk to the Trastevere area which had lots of bars and restaurants. The bars and the restaurants were always lively what ever day we went. There are also some nice bars/restaurants along the Tiber River.

There was always a lot of street entertainers there also. Most of the entertainers were so good you would actually pay to see them from Magic Acts to Acrobats. It was great to sit and have a drink and watch them. They did draw in a lot of crowds to. We were told to be careful of pickpockets when being distracted. We ensured we did not take anything of value out with us and always kept a close eye on our belongings.
Summary
We probably would not go back to Rome as we had managed to see and do everything we wanted to. The world is such a big place. We have so many other destinations on our list which we would like to visit. If you have never been to Rome then it is a great place to go and a must if you are ever in Europe/Italy.

Skyscanner is a good way to check out when the cheapest flights are.
If only have limited time plan your itinerary before visiting Rome.
Although the risk is low be aware of pickpockets.
If going to Rome in the summer months take a reusable water bottle to fill up regularly.
As with anywhere hot take plenty of suncream, hat etc as when you are site seeing you don’t realise how intense the sun is.
