St Maarten

St Maarten is divided in to separate countries the North being the French side called Saint Martin and the south being the Dutch side called Sint Maarten.

Travelling to St Maarten

Arrived at the cruise port of Philipsburg which is the capital St Maarten on 5th January 2023 on the Marella Explorer 2. When you get off of the ship there are people selling excursions which is around $20 – $25 US dollars.

View of ship in the distance

Taxi’s

There are also many taxi’s waiting to take you to Maho beach. We didn’t book any excursions in St Maarten as we wanted to go to Maho beach which is not far from the port. We knew it was just a short taxi ride away.

You need to queue for the taxi which are mini buses. They will fill the mini bus up before setting off. Everyone who is in the queue is going to the beach. Our taxi driver was very informative about the island and advised that both sides of the Island live independently with their own hospitals, schools, government etc. He was born on the Dutch side of the island which he informed is where there is more work and appears to be financially better than the French side. There were many Casino’s on the Dutch side but not any on the French as it is illegal to gamble there.

View of ship in distance

The beach is around 20 minutes away from port . Where the mini bus drops you off is where they will pick you up again.

Maho Beach

The beach itself is just a couple of minutes away from the car park. There is a small bar which sells food and drinks on the way to the beach. There are also many people walking around the beach selling cold drinks.

Maho beach is renowned for how close it is to the airport and how low the planes come in to land. There are many signs stating how dangerous it is to get too close to the fence of the airport. Although there are Tiktok and Youtube video’s of thrill seekers clinging to the fence when jets are taking off.

The Power of the jet planes

We witnessed a jet take off and people, hats, shoes, towels all getting blown in to the sea. The beach has a very steep incline from the sea. There were people literally rolling down the beach. It was funny to watch as nobody got hurt thankfully. The beach did clear around that area just in case another plane took off but it wasn’t long before other unexpecting people came and sat in the same area in the path of the jets.

Planes taking off and landing

It is really busy with flights coming in to land every few minutes. Most of the planes were smaller planes from other Caribbean Islands. The smaller planes and the propeller planes did not have the same impact as the larger jets when they were taking off. It was quite safe on the beach when they took off or landed.

When the planes are landing it really does feel that you can reach up and touch them although not advisable to even try.

The Beach

The beach itself has lovely soft sand and crystal clear turquoise sea. The sea was so pleasant to swim in with its warm temperature. There were many people swimming in the sea but the main attraction is the planes flying in and out.

After a few hours we then went back to get a taxi to the ship. Again there are many taxi’s lined up to take you back.

Maho Beach

Summary

We did not see much of the island therefore can not comment on what it is like to stay there or to have visited other places of interest in St Maarten’s other than Maho Beach. What we did see of the island was beautiful even though in parts there was still evidence of 2017 hurricane Irma . Although being on the cruise allowed us to see many destinations in a short time but the downside is you don’t get enough time to really explore the island. It would be better to visit less places and have more time in them.

Antigua

Antigua means ancient in Spanish. Its capital St John’s is home to over 22,500 people.

Travelling to Antigua

We arrived in Antigua on 3rd January 2023 on the Tui Marella Explorer. The cruise port was in Antigua’s capital St John’s. Please see for full details of itinerary of cruise.

This is where you disembark the ship there are several people wanting to sell you excursions which are between $20 and $25 which is a lot cheaper than Tui. Also there are also many duty free shops selling alcohol, perfume, tobacco, jewellery etc.

View from ship

Prior to the cruise we had looked at excursions in Antigua. When deciding what to do on an excursion we like to do something that is unique to the country/island or that we may never do it again. The one that caught our eye was Sting Ray City. There are some people that do not feel that the stingrays are not treated very nice. But they are in their natural habitat and are free to swim away if wanting to do so. Although we were not 100% sure if this was the right thing to do we decided to go ahead and book the excursion and see for ourselves as many other people had advised it was a great experience and the Stingray’s were never treated badly.

View of ship from streets in Antigua

Stingray City

As we had booked our cruise with Tui we looked at their excursions but unfortunately they didn’t do it. Therefore we looked at other tour operators who were also booked up. We contacted Stingray City direct who advised that they had capacity for us on the day we wanted to go. Although we were advised we had to make our own way there which cost $40 each way. Stingray City cost $50 each which is around £146. Many taxi’s are available as soon as you step off the ship.

Lush green island

Travel to Stingray City

The taxi took about 30 -40 minutes to reach our destination. On our way the driver informed us of various landmarks and information regarding the island. He explained that he was conscripted to the military for 2 years but then became a lorry driver. He advised that to be a taxi driver you have to not only have a license to carry passengers but you have to return to education.

When we arrived at our destination he advised that he would wait for us as the experience was predicted to last approximately 2 hours. We were a bit early for our slot of 11 am therefore had to wait for more people to arrive.

Waiting area view

Disclaimer

When more people arrived we were taken to a shaded area where we had to sign a disclaimer. Following this we were put into lines for the boats that take you to where the Stingrays are. They cram as many people as possible on to the boats. Be prepared for the water to splash up the sides of the boat and hang on to your hat.

Floating Island

The boat takes you to a floating island where the sea around it is crystal clear and turquoise in colour. As the boats do not leave all belongings can be left on the boat. Snorkelling equipment is provided if you want it. We prefer the full face masks therefore brought our own. Many people were nervous about getting in to the water with the Stingray’s but the guides reassured people that it was ok. Although there were many people that watched from the floating island and did not go in the water.

Crystal clear turquoise sea

Interaction with the Stingrays

The guides throw squid in to the water to attract the Stingrays and soon there were a lot of them swimming around. It was a bit a nerving to begin with when the large Stingrays were brushing past us but soon we felt comfortable with them. They were very tame and did not appear to mind being stroked. The guides encouraged people to have photo’s with the Stingrays which had been mentioned by other people that they did not agree with this. We were also given squid and were able to feed the Stingrays directly. Stingrays such there food up like a vacuum so it is a good idea when feeding them not to let any digits get in the way. The guides show you the correct way to feed them to avoid any injuries.

When most of the food had gone a lot of the Stingrays swam away but there were a few that continued to swim through the crowd looking for food. We never witnessed anything which we feel would warrant anyone to say that they are mistreated. We suppose holding them is not natural to them and this is something that should not be done. When we held one it was very calm as we had been shown the correct way in order not to distress them. The stingray did not even swim away when we finished holding it. The stingray continued to swim around people.

Holding the Stingray

Amount of time in the water

Not sure how long we had in the water with the Stingrays but it seemed long enough. We were taken back on the boats to where we started. Here we were given a cup of Rum Punch and given the option to purchase photo’s. The Rum Punch was very strong and went straight to our heads lol. We bought the photo even though it was not very flattering at a cost of $15 dollars.

Our taxi driver was waiting for us to take us back to the ship. On our way back he appeared to take us a different way which was through the streets in the centre of Antigua.

Summary

Antigua is a beautiful island. The people are so friendly and helpful. There is a lot more to see and do than what we had the time for. We would love to come back to this island and spend more time here. Maybe another cruise or a holiday who knows time will tell.

Things to do

  • Swim with Stingray’s at Stingray City
  • Visit Shirley Heights
  • Visit Nelson’s Dock
  • Visit the Brid Sanctuary
  • Visit a beach
  • Taste the Rum Punch
  • Take an island tour.

Top Tips

  • If wanting an island tour go to one of the local operators when you get off the ship if on a cruise. Prices are $20 – $25 which is much cheaper than Tui, Cruise Ship excursions. It also benefits the local people.
  • If wanting to go to Stingray City book before you go on the cruise, holiday or if you are just visiting the island. Stingray City gets booked up pretty quick. We booked direct with Stingray City. We emailed them on stingray@candw.ag
  • If time is limited as we were plan your itinerary before you go. If where you are wanting to go is not on one of the local island tour let them know as they will always try to accommodate. Having a private tour of the island, seeing what you want to see and going where you want is relatively cheap just ask for a price from one of the local taxi’s/tour operators.
  • Do not confuse the East Caribbean Dollar (XCD) with the USA dollar, The XCD is worth a lot less. At the time of our travels 1 USD was 82p and 1 XCD was 30p.

Wroclaw

Wroclaw has one of the biggest Christmas Markets in Europe. It is also home to over 600 bronze gnomes scattered around the streets.

Travelling to Wroclaw

We flew to Wroclaw in the month of November from Manchester Airport with Ryanair which cost £29 return plus extra for seats and case which added another £30 each. We mainly went to Wroclaw to visit the Christmas Market. Private transfers from the Airport took around 30 minutes.

Accommodation

The apartments we stayed in were Riverside Apartments booked through Booking.com. It was a one-bedroomed apartment with a sofa bed, dining area and fully equipped kitchen. Although the apartments were described as having a river view there wasn’t much of the river to be seen. The apartment was on the top floor and the building did not have a lift therefore we wouldn’t recommend it for anyone who has any mobility issues as it was up 8 flights of stairs. The location of the apartment was close to public transport. It was also about 15 minutes’ walk from the main square of Wroclaw. Although the apartment was basic it met our needs and the location was good.

Christmas Market

The Christmas Market is set up across the main square. It is lovely during the day but looks even prettier at night when all of the stalls are lit up. Basically the market is centred around the square but due to the sheer size of it, it stretches way outside of the square and along the side streets. There are so many stalls selling a variety of items such as hats, gloves, food and drink, and souvenirs. It was so interesting seeing the different local foods and items for sale.

Christmas Market

Straightaway we tried Meat Pierogi (which is a bit like a meat dumpling) as they looked so good. This is a must try when in Poland. We subsequently tried Paczki which is similar to a doughnut but we found this a bit too sweet for our taste. Overall there were so many Polish foods to try which all looked good but we did not manage to taste a lot of them. There are several places that sell various flavours of mulled wine served in little mugs shaped like boots.

Mulled wine

It is thought the idea of putting the mulled wine in boots comes from the Western Christian tradition that on St Nicholas Day (5th December) children put boots out for their presents to be put into. Obviously we had to try most of the flavours of the mulled wine which were all different – our favourites were the red wine based ones. Additionally they served hot chocolate and coffee with rum which was also very nice. The hot drinks were needed as it was very cold.

It was lovely just wandering around the market and looking around the different stalls. There is also a lovely smell from the market that is a combination of the sweet doughnuts, sausages and the mulled wine. It always makes you feel hungry even if you are not wanting to eat due to the nice smells. It is a great atmosphere and definitely puts you in the Christmas spirit.

Food stalls

Places of interest

There are lots of interesting places to visit in Wroclaw away from the main square. We went to Otrow Tumski (Cathedral Island) on a beautiful crisp, sunny day. This is the oldest part of Wroclaw. It is just a short walk from the square and well worth visiting. You can go into the Cathedral and walk around free of charge. You can also walk halfway up to the top of the Cathedral but if you want to go to the very top then you have to pay a small amount to do so.

Cathedral Island

We also went to see the sculptures in Wroclaw of people sinking into and rising out of the ground (“Przefscie” which translates to “Passage”). These statues were built in memory of people that were killed or went missing during the period of martial law in Poland that occurred during the 1980s.

We also spent a short time looking for the bronze gnomes that are scattered around the streets of Wroclaw. It isn’t clear exactly how many of them they actually are. You can buy maps and brochures to try and track them all if you have the time to do so. It would take some time as there are said to be over 600. A lot of the gnomes are sponsored by businesses therefore you will find many of them outside their premises.

One of the many bronze gnomes

Dinning out

There are many places to eat and drink in Wroclaw catering for every taste and budget. Besides the traditional polish restaurants there are the typical chain restaurants, fast food restaurants, and others specialising in the usual Italian, Spanish and French cuisine. There are also many take away places where you can get your curry or kebab fix if you need it.

Many people on an evening if not eating at the Christmas market would spend the time over a meal and a bottle of wine at one of the restaurants.

Stalls set up for food in the Christmas Market

Basically we ate at the Christmas market as this is why we were in Wroclaw. Also we ate at a French Bistro/Cafe called FC Nalesniki which is just a short walk from the Market Square. We had savoury pancakes which were delicious and a soft drink each which came to less than 10 Euros. There were a few bars around the square which did not get really busy. We went to a Irish Pub called Pub Guiness. There was live music on each night. This bar was busy both during the day and of an evening. It is only a short walk from the Market Square. Prices were similar to those in the UK.

FC Nalesniki

Summary

To summarise Wroclaw is a beautiful place both day and night. This was our first visit to Wroclaw for the Christmas market therefore can not comment on what it is like in the summer months but we are sure that it would bring a different experience to the visit. We especially loved the Christmas Market and its atmosphere. Previously we have been to the Christmas Market at Gdansk before but we preferred Wroclaw. It snowed whilst we were there which made it feel really Christmassy. The snow did get quite heavy at times, particularly on the night before we were due to leave so we were a bit worried if this would affect our flight, but we needn’t have done so. Nothing changed due to the snow; everyone went about their business as usual unlike in the UK when everything comes to a standstill.

Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City which is also known as Saigon is the largest City in Vietnam

Travelling to Ho Chi Minh City

We travelled to Ho Chi Minh from Bangkok. The Airport is only around 20 – 30 minutes from the centre of Ho Chi Minh. Private transfers are cheap compared to a lot countries. As we did not know if we would get a taxi which was safe and would not rip us off we pre booked a transfer prior to travelling.

Accommodation

We stayed at the Bay Hotel for 2 nights on our way to Nha Trang. The hotel is nice and clean and in a good location. The rooms have a mini bar which is stocked up daily and is included in the price. Some of the rooms have a river and city view which is nice. There is also a lovely roof top pool which overlooks the city. The pool is quite small but there weren’t many people using it at the time we travelled. In fact we were the only people in the pool on more than one occasion. It costs around £50 a night which includes breakfast. The breakfast is lovely and caters for most tastes (Continental, Vegetarian, Asian and American). The staff at the hotel were all very helpful and spoke good English.

Pool

Sunset Cruise

There is so much to see and do in Ho Chi Minh but due the amount of time we had there we were limited as to what we could fit in. We did manage to do a sunset cruise on the Saigon River though which cost around £50 each. We were picked up from our hotel and taken a short distance to where we boarded the boat at the Saigon Pier at around 4pm. It was a lovely day with clear blue skies. It was a modern speed boat which was around 60% full so there was plenty of room on the boat. There was also a English speaking guide who was very knowledgeable. We got to see some lovely sites from the boat and also given a lot of information regarding the sites including Dragon Floating Temple.

Sun set cruise

We stopped off at a lovely hotel on the river for drinks and a bite to eat if you wanted (drinks and food were extra). It was lovely seeing the amazing sun set on the river. The whole trip took about 4 hours from pick up to drop off at our hotel. Some people stated that the cost of the trip wasn’t worth it but we were happy with the price as it was a lovely day/evening.

Hotel for drinks

Nightlife

Whilst in Ho Chi Minh we wanted to visit the most famous bar in the city the Apocalypse Now. This was a short taxi ride from our hotel. We got there quite early at around 7pm therefore it was pretty quiet. It did start filling up later at about 9pm. There were a lot of drinks offers too in this bar. We can imagine that it really gets going in this bar further into the evening. As our time in Ho Chi Minh was limited we decided to go to other bars.

Apocalypse Now

We decided to go to Bui Vien Street which reminded us a lot of Khoa San Road in Bangkok. It is a really lively street full of bars and places to eat. There are a lot of bars that are not there during the day and are just set up at night time. There are a variety of bars and eating places here to suit most tastes and budgets. It is very noisy on an evening which we do not mind but I would not want to stay in an hotel too close. We went to The View Rooftop Bar which had great cocktails and overlooked the street. It also had happy hour everyday 4-10pm which was great. The food here was pretty good and very reasonably priced. This was our favourite bar out of the ones we had visited.

Bui Vien Street

Summary

Ho Chi Minh is a great place to visit. Our only regret is that we did not have enough time to see the things we wanted to see. We will definitely be returning to see more.

Things to do

  • Visit the Reunification Palace
  • Visit the Giac Lam Pagoda
  • Visit Notre Dame Cathedral
  • Visit Cao Dai Temple
  • Visit Ben Thanh Market

Top Tips

  • There is so much to see and do in Ho Chi Minh 2 days is not enough time. Plan your visit, what you want to see and do and allow the time to do this.
  • If you like a lively atmosphere then Bui Vien Street is the place to be if you don’t then definitely avoid this area.
  • Hotels vary so much in cost so do your research before booking and check out various websites.
  • We thought the Sunset cruise was lovely and we got to see a lot in a short space of time.
  • Although pick pocketing and bag snatching is low risk in Ho Chi Minh be aware as it does happen on occasion – take the usual precautions.

Barcelona

Barcelona is the 5th most visited city in Europe. Istanbul, Paris, London and Rome are visited more. Barcelona is the most popular city to visit in Spain.

Travel to Barcelona

We visited Barcelona as it was part of our itinerary on our cruise. Please click on following link to find further information regarding the cruise and all the destinations we visited Highlights of the Mediterranean Our ship docked at Barcelona port on 15th July 2022. We were then taken to bus to the centre of Barcelona which was arranged by the cruise ship. There was a small fee to use the bus 7.50 euro’s return.

Hop on Hop Off Bus

We decided to get on the hop on hop off bus rather than a guided tour. There are two different hop on hop off bus routes around Barcelona (West – Orange route and East – Green Route). You may need to use both of these routes to see the sights that you want to (we needed to). We originally got on the West Orange route as one of the sights we wanted to see was Camp Nou home to FC Barcelona and is only on this route.

When you get on the bus you are given headsets and plug them in at the side of the seat. There is a button to change the language in to English if it is not already on this. The information provided is extremely interesting with facts about each destination, places of interest etc on the route. You can just stay on the bus all the time until the end of the journey or you can get off as and when you chose. Each route takes about 2 hours to complete if you remained on the bus.

Hop on hop off bus

Destinations – Orange Route

We got off the bus at stop 5 which is Camp Nou. Camp Nou translates to new field. This was a very popular destination to get off at as most of the bus got off at this point. Some people had booked tours of the stadium but has time was limited we were unable to do this. We wondered around the outside of the stadium along with lots of other people as this is obviously a main tourist destination. We took several photo’s and then got back on the bus. The buses run every 15 minutes to each stop on the route.

Barcelona football ground

Our next destination was Casa Batilo which was 2 stops away from Camp Nou. Casa Batilo is sometimes known has “the house of the dragon. Casa Batilo is a building in the centre of Barcelona. It is a bit strange to see it surrounded by designer shops and chain fast food places. It is a very interesting building and nothing like anything we have seen anywhere in the world.

Casa Batilo

We decided to plan where we were going to go to next therefore we stopped and had a bite to eat and a cold drink. Temperature was already 39 degrees at 1pm. In these temperatures drinking a lot of water is essential.

Destinations – Green Route

We decided to walk to get on the East – Green Route to go to Basilica de a Sagrada Familia which is a large unfinished church. It is the most popular tourist attraction in Barcelona. When you get off the bus you can see how popular it is as it is very crowded but still well worth the visit. If in Barcelona this is a must see. Although it is still unfinished even though it was started being built in 1882 it is breath taking. We took a lot of photo which we have looked back on and even now see something new as there is so much detail gone in to this church.

Basilica de a Sagrada Familia

The queue to get back on the bus was very long but it did go down pretty quickly. We got on the bus to the end of the line and then decided to walk down the Las Rambles the most famous boulevard in Barcelona. It is lined with nice bars, restaurants and street sellers. It would have been nice to have had a drink and a bite to eat on Las Rambles but unfortunately did not have enough time as the last bus back to the ship was 5.30pm.

Las Rambles

Summary

Although we did not get off at many stops we did manage to see a lot of the sights of Barcelona. Barcelona is one of the trendiest cities in Europe. It has something to offer everyone of all ages. We would have loved to have had more time in Barcelona. To have time to visit the beaches and have a Sangria and some Tapas in one of the traditional bars and Restaurants. There was so much more we wanted to see and do. We think you need at least a few days in Barcelona. We will definitely come back to Barcelona.

Venice

Venice is famous for its canals and gondola’s. The Grand Canal is the main canal which is the main water traffic route around Venice. It is also home to the famous St Marks Square and the Rialto Bridge.

Travelling to Venice

We flew to Venice from Leeds and Bradford Airport in the month of July. We flew with Ryanair to Treviso Airport which is a 1 hour bus ride from Venice centre. Ryanair provided a free bus to the centre. If you fly to Marco Polo airport the transfer is only about 20 minute’s. The cost of flying to Marco Polo was a lot more expensive hence why we flew to Treviso. The bus dropped us right next to a Kiosk where you can buy tickets for the water buses. We were in Venice for 4 days therefore we bought the tickets for the full duration of our visit.

Accommodation

We stayed at a budget hotel on the Lido (Unfortunately does not exist now). This was a short waterbus ride from Venice Centre. The Hotel was a short walk to the water buses and the beach. It also had a supermarket opposite which was very useful too.

Site Seeing via Waterbus

On our first day we caught the waterbus in to Venice centre and went to St Marks Square. This is a beautiful square with lots of bars and restaurants around the square.. It is a very busy square with lots of tourists which you would expect. The architecture of the buildings is quite spectacular. There are a lot of restrictions in Venice regarding building work and renovation which is lovely that it still keeps its charm. Should renovations be needed then a sheet is put up in front of any scaffolding with a picture of the building on it to appear that it is the building itself.

St Marks Square

At St Marks Square the bars and restaurants are quite expensive compared to other area’s of Venice. Many of the bars have live classical music which adds to the atmosphere. As it was a lovely sunny day despite the cost we decided to sit and have a drink or two watching the world go by.

Bar/Restaurant in St Marks Square with Classical Music

There were also some lovely restaurants and bars at the side of the canal. We had lunch here and a couple of drinks watching the world go by. The food and drinks were much cheaper than at St Marks Square.

Bars and Restaurants near Rialto Bridge

If in Venice then a visit to the Rialto Bridge, There is an amazing view of the Grand Canal from the Bridge with bars and restaurants lining either side of the canal. Both day and night it is a lovely place to visit.

Rialto Bridge

After spending most of the day in the centre of Venice we got the waterbus back to our hotel to get changed for the evening. We then got the waterbus back to Venice centre for the evening. It was nice seeing it all lit up at night time. We wandered along some of the back streets and found lots of little traditional bars which were nice to sit out at of an evening.

Day at the Beach

The next day we decided we would organise a picnic and go to the beach for the day which was 10 minutes walk from our hotel. As it was a hot day the beach was very busy. Unfortunately some of the more expensive hotels own parts of the beach therefore it is only residents that can sit in those area’s. There is still a lot of the beach that anyone can sit it. There are as what you would expect from any beach places to buy food and drink if you wanted to. We went in the sea quite a lot as it did cool you down a bit. The sea was really nice clear and warm. We spent all day on the beach having drinks and food.

Unflattering photo at The Lido

We decide to stay on the Lido for the evening and went to a local bar/restaurant for something to drink and eat. The prices were at least half of what it was in Venice Centre. Some of the bars got quite lively. At 11 O’clock nobody is allowed to dink or sit outside of the bars therefore everyone came in doors. Apparently it is a crime to do so.

Grand Canal

On one occasion we caught the water bus to the end of the grand canal where there is a glass factory, shops and few small places to buy something to eat and drink. We had a wander around the glass factory and the shops etc which did not take very long as it is only small. Finally we then got the waterbus in to the centre of Venice and wondered around some more of the back streets.

Grand Canal at night

Summary

Although our hotel was not have a high standard it was always clean and the service was good. Also we thought the destination of our hotel was great. This was because could visit the beach etc but also we were only a short waterbus away from the sites of Venice. We would definitely go back to Venice. We would also stay on the Lido again.

Florence

Florence is the capital of the Tuscany region. It is also home to Michaelangelo’s famous sculpture “David”. The center of Florence was declared a World Heritage Site in 1982.

Travelling to Florence

We went to Florence on 13th July 2022 via coach from our cruise ship. Please click on the following link for full details of the cruise and our itinerary Highlights of the Mediterranean. It took about 1 1/2 hours to get to Florence from the port of Livorno. We had our own guide on the coach who talked us through various area’s we travelled through on the coach. She was very knowledgeable about Italy. It was a bit strange finding out that area’s of Italy do not like other area’s of Italy. For example our guide was from Livorno in Italy and she spoke negatively of people from Pisa although it be in a jokey way.

Places of interest

It was a very hot day 39 degrees with bright sunshine. Later met another guide who took us around various places of interest in Florence. The Guide was also very knowledgeable about Florence. She spoke at great lengths about the The Cathedral of Sana Maria del Fiore and Piazza Duomo. We were at the Cathedral for over an hour. Fortunately we were stood in the shade whilst listening.

The guide took us to see some extremely interesting tourist attractions in Florence including Ponte Vecchio bridge and Michael Angelos David to name a few.

Ponte Vecchio bridge

Florence is a beautiful and interesting place to visit. There is so much to see and do that you could spend more time there but unfortunately we had to go to our next destination which was Pisa, But before we left Florence we were taken to the viewing point which over looks the whole of Florence. The view is absolutely spectacular.

View of Florence from View Point.

There is also Michael Angelo’s David at the viewing point, Should you be in need of a cold drink and a bite to eat there are stalls selling food and drink.

Michael Angelo’s David

Food and Drink

We had lunch at a little side restaurant and watched the world go by. It was a typical Italian restaurant serving traditional food and good wines. Due to the heat of the day the restaurant had good fans which kept you cool. There were a lot of people in the restaurant drinking Aperol Spritz. We just stuck with water and soft drinks as we had a long day.

We had an ice cream in a lovely little bar/restaurant and sat eating it on an upstairs balcony other looking the streets of Florence. The ice creams cost 16 Euro’s for 2 but the surroundings and where we were sat made them worth every penny. The ice cream was very nice too.

Shopping

Florence has a commercial are full of many designer shops but it also has a lot of traditional narrow cobbled streets with nice little bars and restaurants. Florence has the best of both worlds the old and the new. You could spend days in Florence and still not have enough time to see everything.

We then had to head back to the meeting point and wait for our guide to take us back to the coach. We had to wait in intense heat for people who were not back in time. This is always the problem with organised excursions.

Summary

Florence is a beautiful place with so much to see and do. We would like to return in the future and do the things we have not managed to do on this trip. Also it would be nice to have the freedom to go where we want as apposed to an organised excursion.

Pisa

Pisa is a city in Tuscany and is famous for its leaning tower. Although this is the most famous building Pisa does have a lot of other historical places to visit.

Travelling to Pisa

Firstly we were picked up by coach from Florence as we were on an excursion from our cruise on 13th July 2022. Please click on the following link for full details of cruise and itinerary Highlights of the Mediterranean. It is a short walk from the coach park to the leaning tower. Also there are a lot of people around all doing the same thing. However we had a tour guide who put up a sign for us to follow her as it was very crowded even on the streets. Before we were left to do our own thing the tour guide told us where the meeting point was and when to be back to get on to the coach.

Cruise Ship

It was a particularly hot day reaching 39 degrees at times . Consequently even the dogs had shoes on as the ground was too hot for them to walk on. On the way to the tower etc there are several stalls selling things souvenirs, drinks, food etc. Surprisingly there is even a Mc Donald’s on the way too. Despite expecting Pisa to be very touristy we were shocked to see how busy it was. Also we found it a bit of a let down with a Mc Donald’s not far from the tower itself. It was certainly very hard to take any photo’s as there was always someone walking in the way.

Places of Interest

The leaning tower and the Pisa Duomo Cathedral are in beautiful ground. Undoubtedly the architecture of both buildings are absolutely spectacular. Also you can go in to the Cathedral each day form 10am – 7pm and look round. Subsequently you can ago up the leaning tower but you have to book on busy days as there is always a queue.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

The Baptistery is also located on the same grounds as the leaning tower. Unquestionably this also has spectacular architecture. The building are stunning and definitely worth visiting. You cant go to Pisa without visiting the leaning tower.

The Baptistery

Time in Pisa

Unfortunately we didn’t have much time in Pisa as we had booked an excursion which allowed us to spend a lot of time in Florence but not has much in Pisa. We would have like to have more time and see more of Pisa not just the leaning tower site. It would have been nice to experience some of the other places of interest and evening time in a nice restaurant and bar.

Food and Drink

Because of the intense heat a lot of people were trying to find shade. The stalls selling cold drinks were always busy even Mc Donald’s had a long queue. The stalls selling souvenir’s etc were reasonably priced. Water did vary from place to place form 3.5 Euro’s to 1 Euro.

Finally we waited at the meeting point for some time until all the coach was back. Because it was so hot and just stood still with very little shade the time seemed longer. Unfortunately this is the downside to excursion’s as there is always someone who is not back on time. Saying that we had a great time and saw some wonderful sites.

Summary

Although we did see the main sites of Pisa but felt it had a lot more to offer and would have liked to have spent more time. May be to have something to eat and drink in a traditionally restaurant. We definitely feel that there is a lot more to Pisa than what we have managed to write about.

Travel Tips

Travelling Light

If you are wanting to travel light there are ways to maximise the amount you can take for carry on baggage.

  • Buy toiletries in airport – this means that you can take what ever size you want and are not restricted to the 100ml rule .
  • If needing more than one jacket/coat wear them – you can always take them off when you are in the airport.
  • Wear coats/jacket with pockets where you can put items in them (not creams or liquids).
  • Travel Vacuum packs are a good investment as they come with a light weight mini USB pump vacuum which enables you to fit triple the amount of clothes in a suitcase. (always check the weight of the case when full to avoid additional charges).
  • If you want to take toiletries with you instead of buying at airport, buy the empty travel bottles/tubs (can buy for as little as a £1 per pack) and fill them with your own products.
  • Mosquito repellent is expensive at the airport and some of the bottles are over 100ml. Mosquito repellent wipes are ok to be left in your hand luggage and have worked fine for me in the past.
  • If you have more than one carry on bag and are limited to one bag. Get a duty free bag and put things in that as it is not counted as a carry on bag.

Train Travel UK

  • Using the Train split website is a good way to save money on most journeys – just enter your details in to the website and it will calculate the savings for you. You don’t have to change trains to get the savings – https://www.trainsplit.com
  • If there is more than one person travelling together it may be worth checking out getting a Two Together Rail card which costs £30 for a year. I have bought more than one of these as I have used one with my friend and another with Mike. You just need a photo of each of you to add onto the railcard – https://www.twotogether-railcard.co.uk
  • Booking in advance can save a lot of money. You can usually book up to 3 months in advance.

Cheap Flights

  • When airlines advertise a sale try to be ready to search at the time they state the sale starts to bag a bargain.
  • If you are flexible with where you want to go and dates try skyscanner – https://www.skyscanner.net/skyscanner/flights. In the search specify the month you are wishing to travel and leave the destination as Flexible. This will bring up all the destinations with the cheapest price for that month.  We have had return flights to various places including Prague, Portugal and Poland for under £45.
  • Booking flights in advance is good too as when the demand for the flight goes up so does the price.
  • Be aware of additional costs with certain airlines as although the headline price of the flight may seem cheap, when other elements are added, such as hand luggage or reserved seating, it can increase the price considerably and if you are on a tight budget that’s the last thing you need. Certain airlines now charge for a small suitcase. Other airlines may charge a bit more for the flight but include hand luggage and therefore could work out cheaper.

Airport Lounges

Different airports and terminals in different countries all have different choices of Airport Lounges. Search the following to weigh up if it is worth the amount that is being charged.

  • What is the cost.
  • What is available in the lounge (wifi, Tv, newspapers etc).
  • What drinks are available (alcoholic and non- alcoholic).
  • What food and snacks are available (hot and cold).
  • How long can you be in the lounge prior to your fight departure.
  • re you able to stay in the lounge should your flight be delayed (some lounges offer this at a small cost).
  • Search for discount codes prior to booking . We have used discount codes in the past for airport lounges and have saved up to 12%.

Considering the cost of food and drinks in airports we have found that the lounges are often good value for money and the whole experience more relaxing than being in the main terminal concourse.

Airport Transfers

There are so many transport companies in every country to choose from with various prices for the same journey.

  • Check prices for more than one company.
  • Look for discount codes before booking.
  • Check the companies reviews as some companies have been known to take the money and not turn up.
  • Check if your accommodation offers airport transfers as this can often be safer and cheaper.
  • Ensure you have your flight times and address of accommodation prior to booking.

Accommodation

Again there are so many companies to choose from that offer the same accommodation at various prices.

  • Check price comparison sites such as Trivago and Tripadvisor.
  • When comparing websites always check you are looking at the same hotel with the same board details. For example one site may offer the hotel at a cheaper price but this may be on a room-only basis, whereas another site may offer you the same hotel at a slightly higher price but this may be on a bed and breakfast basis.
  • If you have a disability or children do check whether the hotel can accommodate your needs.
  • Always check package holidays for price as it is not always cheaper to book accommodation, flights and transfers separate.
  • Check out reviews but be aware if you are paying 3 star prices you are not going to get 5 star accommodation.  Take any extreme views with a pinch of salt and look for common elements of feedback from a number of reviews.
  • Secret escapes – https://www.secretescapes.com/luxury/hotels is a good site to look at if you are wanting a bit more luxury in accommodation but without a large price tag.

Package Holidays

Many companies can offer the same package holiday’s at different prices.

  • Check out what the package includes (does it include baggage and transfers)  and if it doesn’t include everything research the cost of the additional elements.
  • Check out reviews of both the package holiday company and accommodation.
  • Check if the company is ATOL and ABTA registered.
  • Check price comparison sites.
  • Some hotels offer various board bases – do check to ensure that the board basis is what you want before booking.
  • If booking all-inclusive check out what is included as all-inclusive varies from hotel to hotel.
  • Some all inclusive finish at 11pm others may be later. Many offer 24 hour all inclusive. Always check that the all inclusive is within the times you want. If you like to have a drink in to the early hours and the all inclusive finishes at 11pm this may put added cost on your holiday.
  • Many travel agencies advise to book in advance which can work better for a lot of people. We have found booking around 2 weeks before we want to travel as saved us a lot of money. For example 2 weeks to Egypt 5 star was £1200 we paid £680 last minute.

About us

Introduction

Let us introduce ourselves! We are Debbie and Mike and our passion is travelling and enjoying life experiences. As we both have grown up children and no pets we are able to travel when we want (work permitting) although we do travel sometimes with family and young children. We also consider ourselves to have quite a young, optimistic outlook on life therefore our experiences on our holidays reflect this.

Reason for setting up the site

The reason we have set up our website is that we want to provide down to earth views, advice and tips for some of the destinations we have visited. Many travel websites focus solely on expensive experiences of far and exotic destinations. Although we do visit some of these destinations we also visit more affordable destinations which are closer to the UK, including places of interest in Europe. On our site we will also include many all inclusive package holidays and cruises.

Unfortunately we are now of an age where the back packer scene and the club scene are no longer for us, but we do like to have a good time! Undoubtedly we like to have fun, sometimes having a drink well into the early hours while meeting many different people. We also like to join in with games and activities when staying in a holiday resort. As well as the fun side of travelling we also like to experience the cultural side of travel and spend a lot of our holiday time sightseeing. Basically we aim to get as much as possible out of our holidays. On this site we will try to cover weather, destinations, places of interest, things to do, entertainment (if in holiday resort), food and drink and nightlife.

We aim to provide advice for travellers who are on a tight budget and also for those that wish to spend a bit more on their trips. Some of the tips we provide at the end of each destination review come from our learnings from our experiences in those locations and which would have been useful to know before we travelled. Many are money-saving tips and we all like to save a bit of money – we believe that if we keep the cost of our trips as low as possible we can afford more travel experiences in the future!

We are new to writing about our travel experiences

Being totally honest we are new to producing a website and writing about our travels so we are sure the site will come with some flaws – we are not professional writers! In addition we are not influenced by or receive any payment from any hotel or travel provider. We are simply here to provide our honest views and opinions on the locations that we have visited. Our main hope is that this site will provide you with a bit of an insight into the locations that we have visited and to provide some ideas and tips should you wish to visit any of the destinations. Over time we have visited so many places which have provided many unforgettable memories. We have written about all of the places we have visited over the past few years.

We hope you enjoy reading our posts on the various destinations we have visited, including package holidays, far away destinations and cruises. Please do let us know what you think by using the feedback function on the site, and also please do share this site with your family and friends. We aim to keep adding to the content of the site as we continue to travel to new destinations.
